Hendricks Township

Hendricks Township is home to the two communities of Caffey and Epoufette.  US 2 is the route that will lead visitors to these small communities, where they will find points of interest such as the Cut River Bridge and picnic area, Hog Island Country Store, and the Cut River Inn.

Interesting History and Facts about Hendricks Township

Caffey, a lumber settlement on the Minneapolis, St. Paul and Sault Ste Marie Railway, was originally called “Lewis”, but because of another post office named Lewis in Michigan, it was given a post office called “Caffey” after the Pennsylvania-born Civil War veteran William N. Caffey, who became the first postmaster in the community.  Epoufette, or “place of rest” in French, was dubbed as such because the early French settlers believed that Father Jacques Marquette used the harbor as a stopping place on his trip down Lake Michigan from St. Ignace.  Although an attempt at commercial fishing was made in Epoufette, it did not receive recognition in the form of a post office until the lumbering operations began.
